Talley Teaches Class in IUPUI Political Science Department
Indianapolis - Yesterday, Councillor Steve Talley was teacher for the day at an IUPUI undergraduate political science class. The class consisted of juniors and seniors. During the lecture period Councillor Talley gave the students a glimpse into how the legislative body of local government operates.
Councillor Talley said, "Students see the Council at work when they watch the news, read the newspaper or tune into the local government Channel, but having someone present to their class and answer questions, allows them an opportunity to get a behind the scenes perspective on what happens."
Students in the class inquired about issues that the Council passed while he was council president, such as the Human Rights Ordinance, the Smokefree Air Act, Indianapolis Marion County Law Enforcement Consolidation, and the Clean Streams Health Neighborhoods Proposal.
Much of Councillor Talley’s presentation was focused on the Council structure including, political make up of the Council, Council committee assignments, and how proposals move through the legislative process.
"It is always an honor to share my experiences and knowledge of the Council with future leaders," said Councillor Talley. "The Council has a direct impact on the lives of students, so it’s good to get their insight and feedback on issues they feel are important," he said.
This is the second time Councillor Talley has spoken to the class of Associate Professor Ramala Bandele who teaches the "Urban Politics" course.
