Councilman Gibson will seek Council's full support for early college high school
Indianapolis - Councilman Ron Gibson applauds Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson on his approval of a charter for the Lawrence Early College High School for Science and Technologies, the first of its kind in Indiana.
In an effort to ensure that the school opens by this fall, today, Councilman Gibson sponsored a council resolution authorizing the Mayor to establish the charter school by issuance of a charter to Lawrence Early College High School, Inc. In addition, Gibson will meet individually with council leadership to ensure passage of the resolution.
"I am hoping for a unanimous vote by the Council showing our complete support for this innovative and well needed high school in Indianapolis", said Councilman Gibson.
Gibson's resolution will be introduced to the Indianapolis City-County Council at its June 5th meeting. It will then be assigned to Council’s Rules and Public Policy Committee for consideration and public testimony. It is anticipated that the resolution will be voted on by the full Council at its meeting on June 19th at 7 p.m. in the City County Building’s Public Assembly Room.
Indiana statute requires the Indianapolis City-County Council to ratify the Mayor's approval of charter schools. To date, the Council has approved 18 charters for the Mayor with a majority vote by the legislative body.
"This is a great opportunity for high school students to get head start on their college education," said Councilman Gibson. "The earlier we get students thinking about college the more likely they will continue with a higher education," he said.
Councilman Gibson also serves as director of the Indiana Charter Schools Advocacy, Inc., which is affiliated with the Indiana Public Charter Schools Association, Inc.
