President Gray’s Thoughts on Coretta Scott King

Indianapolis - Council President Monroe Gray expressed his sympathy for the family of one of the most influential women’s leader in the world, Coretta Scott King, the wife of the slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Last year I was honored to speak at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park for the dedication of the Kennedy/King Memorial that marks the site of the April 4, 1968 announcement from Robert F. Kennedy that Dr. King had been shot. Indianapolis pulled together at that time to support Mrs. King in the loss of her husband, today we must pull together to support her family."

"While Dr. King was alive, Mrs. King dedicated her time to raising their four children, being a devoted wife, serving her church and working with civic organizations to promote peace, justice and nonviolence."

"After his death she opened the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent and Social Change, and led the effort to make her husband’s birthday a national holiday. Today, millions of people around the world celebrate the holiday."

"She spent countless hours spreading Dr. King’s philosophy. Because of that hard work she is admired and leaves a legacy that is astounding."

"We’ve lost a great person who has been a major force in trying to eliminate injustice around the world. She traveled the country and the globe spreading the message of peace. People around the world will enjoy freedom and justice because of her efforts."
