Council creates Committee to consider law enforcement consolidation
INDIANAPOLIS – Council President Steve Talley announced the formation of a committee to consider the possibility of merging the Indianapolis Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department. The new Indianapolis/Marion County Law Enforcement Consolidation Committee will be chaired by Councillor Mary Moriarty Adams, who is also chairwoman of the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee.
President Talley said, “The committee will determine if the departments should be consolidated into the Consolidated Law Enforcement Department. If the committee decides to move forward with the merger, it will also develop a plan on how we should move to accomplish it.” The committee meetings will be open to the public, and public testimony will be taken.
According to Senate Bill 307, which included a small portion of Mayor Bart Peterson’s Indianapolis Works proposal and passed the Indiana General Assembly on April 29, the Council by majority vote may, adopt an ordinance to combine IPD and the Sheriff’s Department. Before the merger can occur, the Council must hold a public hearing and determine that reasonable and adequate police protection can be provided through consolidation and that consolidation is in the public interest.
