MAP of District 5

Jeff Coats represents District 5 on the Indianapolis City County Council.  District 5 is in northeast Marion County and includes parts of Lawrence, Oaklandon and Geist.  Jeff serves on the Public Safety Committee and the Rules & Public Policy Committee.

Jeff previously served 6 years as an at-large member of the Lawrence City Council. He chaired the council’s Public Safety Committee in addition to serving as a member of several other council committees. Key initiatives in Lawrence included:

Increased Public Safety Staffing
Worked with other council members to add more police to the streets and restore fire apparatus staffing to 2011 levels.

Created tax-free revenue streams for public safety
Authored a proposal for an intergovernmental agreement which allows Lawrence taxpayers to retain 100% of ticket fine/deferral fee revenue to be used for public safety. Previously only sent 10% of these dollars went to the city.

Increased Transparency
Authored proposal requiring all council & board meetings be held in the Public Assembly Room, rather than smaller conference rooms. The proposal also required all meetings be broadcast on the local government channel.

Jeff also works with individual citizens and neighborhood groups on “nuts & bolts” issues such as adding neighborhood stop signs and repairing sidewalks.

Jeff looks forward to building on these experiences on the City-County Council.

Jeff has current and past volunteer and leadership roles with City of Indianapolis Telecom & Video Services Board, Ft. Harrison Reuse Authority, East 91st Christian Church Special Needs Ministry, Lawrence/Ft. Harrison Redevelopment Corporation, and the Ronald McDonald House.

A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, Jeff and his wife Amy started their family in Lawrence in 1997.
