Joanne Sanders has been active in local and state politics since the late 1970s, serving as Vice Precinct Committee person, Precinct Committee person and Vice Ward Chair since 1994. She has also served as a delegate to the State and National Democratic Conventions. She was elected Councillor-at-Large for the Indianapolis City Council, where she currently serves as Minority Leader and a member of the Committee on Commitees and the Administration and Finance and Rules and Public Policy Committees.

As the former director of the Indiana State AFL-CIO Labor Institute for Training, Inc., Sanders was responsible for developing grant proposals and administering programs for dislocated workers, school to work programs, and equity in the workplace.  She is currently employed as an International Representative for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).  She serves on the Executive Board of the Central Indiana Labor Council and the Advisory Board to the Indiana Commission for Women.  Locally, she serves on the JWJ Workers' Rights Board and the Bethlehem House Board.
Sanders was instrumental in organizing the Central Indiana Chapter of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), served for two years as Indiana's CLUW State Vice President, and represents Indiana on the CLUW National Executive Board.  An advocate for life-long learning, Sanders has a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Management from the Krannert School of Business at Purdue University and a Masters in Public Affairs from Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, Sanders has a daughter and three grandchildren who help to keep her life balanced.
