Tornado 2008 - Storm Debris Removal

 Heavy Trash Truck

In response to the May 30th tornado event, the Department of Public Works (DPW) immediately dispatched crews to assess damage throughout the city of Indianapolis. By the following morning, June 1, dedicated DPW staff were working and coordinating with the Parks Forestry Division and other city agencies in the initial stages of the storm clean up.

Storm Debris Removal Effort
Over the past two weeks, the Department of Public Works (DPW) has collected over 593 tons of debris including trees and brush from the hardest hit area of the event. As a result of the tornado and a barrage of storms that followed days later, through June 13, DPW has collected and removed an average of 43 tons of debris per day.

Totals are expected to climb as DPW continues clean up efforts on the eastside of town hardest hit by the May 30th tornado event and moves resources to southside flood areas.

Storm Debris Within Most Affected Areas
On Tuesday, June 3, DPW initiated a special 2-week trash route to address damage caused by the May 30th tornado. The special route encompassed the 2.5 mile area most affected by the storm including streets bounded by 38th Street (S), 42nd Street (N), Post Road (W) and German Church Road (E). In addtion, dumpsters were placed at the southwest corner of 38th Street to assist residents in the disposal of other storm debris materials.

DPW will continue to address this area until all debris resulting from the tornado event has been removed.

Storm Debris Outside 2.5 Mile Area
Residents outside of the most affected 2.5 mile area are encouraged to contact the Mayor's Action Center (MAC) at 327-4622 to report storm debris that needs to be pick up. Where possible, residents are encouraged to cut and bundle debris into 3 feet square bundles and place at the curb for pick up.

DPW will continue to address these areas until all debris resulting from the tornado event has been removed.

Volunteer Resources
Anyone wishing no cost assistance for cutting up tree debris may register for help by either calling 317-203-3053 or going to www.helpmarioncounty.org.  You will need to indicate how many trees, approximate sizes, and whether the tree is on or against a building or not.  Once registered, you will be contacted to determine a time for the volunteers to be in your area.  Someone will have to be home while the teams are working on your property.

YOUR help is needed!
Individuals wishing to volunteer to help may also call helpmarioncounty.org at 1-317-203-3053 to register to assist.
