Winter Weather Safety Tips

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works would like to offer the following tips to keep you safe during the winter snow season:

  1. Carry the following items in your car at all times in case of emergency: small bag of abrasive material, snow shovel, snowbrush, traction mats, flashlight (fresh batteries), ice scraper, cloth/paper towels, booster cables, blanket, warning devices (flare, triangles).
  1. Have your car winterized and get your car's electrical system, brakes, tires, exhaust, heating and windshield wipers/washer system checked by a reputable mechanic.
  1. Never warm up a car in an enclosed area such as a garage. The engine releases carbon monoxide that can be deadly.
  1. Keep a safe stopping distance between you and the car in front of you. It takes longer to stop on wet or icy roads.
  1. Keep your gas tank at least half-full. A full tank prevents a gas line freeze-up.
  1. Most importantly, please remember to SLOW DOWN!

For questions or concerns, please contact the Mayor's Action Center online or call (317) 327-4MAC for assistance.
