Did you know...
That you can recycle electronics through the eCycles program?
eCycles is the term used to describe the recycling of electronics. Everything from cell phones to computers needs to be recycled instead of thrown away.
eCycles will accept any make or model of cell phones, computers (laptop or desk model) and computer components including hard drives, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice and joy stick controllers, PC cards and circuit boards, PC speakers and microphones, USB devices, external power supplies and gaming accessories.
Why?
Electronics contain hazardous materials such as lead and mercury. These materials, if buried in a landfill, can contaminate groundwater and cause serious health issues for humans.
How?
Electronic items such as computers, computer-related parts and cell phones may be dropped off at our regular ToxDrop locations.
Other electronic items such as televisions and stereos should be taken to one of our special eScrap events. Contact the Mayor's Action Center at 327-4MAC (4622) to periodically check for times and locations of upcoming collections.
What happens to the items?
All computer equipment is recycled. Hard drives are degaussed to destroy any data that may be remaining. The entire computer and its components are then broken down into individual materials (such as plastics, metals, glass, precious metals, etc.)and recycled.
