City Reports Record Debris Collections Due to Series of Storm Events Debris removal efforts continue on city’s eastside

INDIANAPOLIS – Over the past two weeks, the Department of Public Works (DPW) collected over 593 tons of debris including trees and brush as a result of a barrage of storms beginning May 30, 2008.

Totals are expected to climb as DPW moves resources to southside flood areas and continues clean up efforts on the eastside of town hardest hit by the May 30th tornado event. Final collections will be addressed through regular heavy trash pickup.

On Friday, June 13th DPW suspended the special route initiated on Tuesday, June 3rd to address damage caused by the May 30th tornado. The special route encompassed the 2.5 mile area most affected by the storm including streets bounded by 38th St. to the south, 42nd St. to the north, Post Rd. to the west and German Church Rd. to the east.

To facilitate removal of remaining tree debris, it is essential that residents who missed Friday’s deadline or are outside of the affected area cut and bundle debris into 3 feet square bundles that can be picked up by regular heavy trash routes. Due to the scope of service necessary throughout the city as a result of the repeated storms, final collections may take several weeks as frequent trips may be required.

For faster or more convenient service, affected residents may choose to have contractors haul away debris to the Southside Landfill located at 2577 Kentucky Ave. Citizens may also take the debris themselves to the Marion County Citizens' Transfer Station located at 2700 S. Belmont Ave., which is open nearly every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A special Sunday drop-off date is being determined and will be announced.

In addition, affected residents may utilize GreenCycle of Indianapolis to dispose of tree debris. Located at 1103 Troy Avenue, GreenCycle is an organics recycling company committed to producing high-quality landscape products including several varieties of mulch, compost and blended soils. Residents may contact GreenCycle of Indianapolis at (317) 780-8175.

The following costs apply:

• Pick-up          $10.00 per load

• Tandems      $35.00 per load

• Roll-offs        $50.00 per load

No treated or painted wood. An up-charge may apply for trash debris in wood.

Affected residents may contact the Mayor’s Action Center at 327-4622 for more detailed information.

Anyone wishing no cost assistance with their tree removal may register for help by either calling 1-866-679-4631 or going to www.helpmarioncounty.org.  You will need to indicate how many trees, approximate sizes, and whether the tree is on or against a building or not.  Once registered, you will be contacted to determine a time for the volunteers to be in your area.  Someone will have to be home while the teams are working on your property.

Those wishing to volunteer to help may also call helpmarioncounty.org to register to assist.
