Nominations open for the city's annual
Access and Inclusion Awards
INDIANAPOLIS – The Mayor's Advisory Council on Disability Affairs announced today that nominations for the annual Access and Inclusion Awards have been opened.
The Access and Inclusion Awards recognize individuals and organizations that support diversity and the inclusion of persons with disabilities in Indianapolis. Nomination applications must be received by Friday, June 22, 2007. Winners will be announced at the 2007 Awareness Day and Awards Ceremony on July 16, 2007.
"Recognizing those that have committed themselves to diversity and inclusion in our community is a great occasion to raise community awareness of increasing access to employment and other activities for persons with disabilities," said Mayor Bart Peterson.
There are three awards that individuals, businesses and organizations can be nominated for:
· 2007 James Pauley Lifetime Service Award
Established in memory of James K. Pauley, who helped to found the MACD and served as its chairperson from 1978 to 1980, the recipient of this award is an individual who demonstrates outstanding contributions promoting the inclusion and independence of persons with disabilities. The 2006 award winner was the late David Scott.
· 2007 Accessibility Award
Designed to recognize individuals, businesses and organizations that have made exceptional contributions to ensure persons with disabilities can participate in events, programs and activities offered in Indianapolis. Contributions to any and all aspects of community life such as in art, culture, recreation, leisure, commerce, travel, worship and social life will be considered. In 2006, the Accessibility Award winner was Karen Russo with Power Soccer of Indy. A certificate of recognition was also presented to the Indianapolis Business Leadership Network and the Indianapolis Private Industry Council.
· 2007 Employer Award
Designed to recognize individuals, business and organizations that have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to providing training and career opportunities to persons with disabilities that promote inclusion. In 2006, two employers received the award – Dr. Michael A. Evans and AIT Laboratories as well as Atlanta Bread Company.

There is no limit on the number of nominations an individual, business or organization can submit; however, applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2007 for consideration.
In addition, businesses and organizations are invited to be part of the Awareness Day festivities. Exhibit reservations are limited; forms can be found on-line by visiting www.indygov.org/MACD or by calling 317/327-4000.
The Mayor's Council on Council on Disability promotes the inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities within the Indianapolis community, and advises the Mayor and city administration on issues that impact people with disabilities.
