Indianapolis Students “Make a Splash”
Second annual event brings a record-number of students to Riverside Park
INDIANAPOLIS – More than 300 fourth and fifth grade students made a splash today at the Department of Public Works’ second annual “Make a Splash” water festival – an increase of more than 100 students over last year’s inaugural event.
“Through events like these, we are able to impress upon young people the importance of preserving and protecting our waterways while doing it in a fun, interactive manner,” said DPW Director Kumar Menon. “I hope these students share what they’ve learned with their friends and families so that everyone can help improve the quality of our water.”
Held outdoors at Riverside Park, students participated in six learning stations, where they explored a diversity of water-related topics by engaging in hands-on activities. These stations included Water Quality Quest, the Long Haul, the Incredible Journey, 200 Feet Under the City, A-Maze-ing Water and Oh No! Sewer Overflow! In addition, five classes participated in a poster exhibition that demonstrated “Why is clean water important?”
At lunch, each teacher was recognized for encouraging their students to be good stewards of local waterways. Teachers and schools involved in this year’s program include:
The Oaks Academy – Tom Prible and Siesta Butler – The Oaks Academy Key Learning Community, North Campus – Kathy Sahm, Geoff Davis, Lisa Fisher and Shannon Schenk Cold Spring School – Sarah Boyd, Stacy Pigg and Karen McCoy Eleanor Skillen Elementary – Jennie Bick, Heather Allen, Ann Vaught, Brittany Waggener and Kim Wright Key Learning Community, River Campus – Hazel Tribble, Carol Forbes and Carol Tiller
“Make a Splash” was made possible through support from the Indianapolis Department of Public Works’ Clean Stream Team, which is working to improve water quality in Marion County. Project WET, a nonprofit water education program for educators and students, designed “Make a Splash” to emphasize water education principles in a fun, interactive environment.
