Snow Update: Wednesday, February 14, 2007 – 5:00 p.m.
DPW Continues Snow Removal Efforts, Shifts Focus to Residential Streets INDIANAPOLIS – Although central Indiana received over 9 inches of snow within a 24-hour period, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) worked tirelessly to ensure that the city’s major thoroughfares were passable throughout the snow event and for commuters this morning.
The city’s snow removal efforts are expected to last for at least the next 72 hours. DPW snow crews will focus on treating major arteries and residential streets, especially “feeder” streets -- the main residential streets that carry neighborhoods to a major thoroughfare. In an unprecedented move, private contractors were called in at 2:00 p.m. today to begin clearing most, if not all, residential streets in Indianapolis-Marion County.
In addition to these efforts, DPW will physically remove snow from downtown arteries within the mile-square tonight. Crews will remove snow from curbs and sidewalks as well as accumulated snow on the street corners and parking lanes. The residual snow will be moved to DPW’s Operations center on south West Street.
Finally, curbside trash and recycling collection was cancelled for Wednesday so that DPW solid waste trucks could continue to help with the snow removal efforts today. Therefore, residents are asked to place their garbage out by Thursday morning for collection. DPW will run double routes Thursday, February 15 through Sunday, February 18 to ensure that all trash from this week is collected. Trash collection is expected to return to its normal schedule on Monday, February 19.
