Snow Preparations: Sunday, February 11, 2007 – 2:40 p.m.

Anticipated snow; city crews prepared and ready

Indianapolis – Central Indiana is expecting to receive four to eight inches of snow beginning Monday afternoon according to the National Weather Service. After receiving over five inches of snow in the Indianapolis area early last week, DPW is prepared to fight the expected snow again.

At this time, DPW will begin to evaluate its snow fleet and prepare its crews beginning this evening. Crews will begin pre-salting city streets during the overnight hours. DPW will deploy 75 trucks focusing on major outbound routes before Monday's rush hour, crews will remain out until further notice.

DPW will apply the following equipment to manage Monday's predicted snow event:

• 75 snow plow trucks to plow and salt the city streets;

• Trash trucks retrofitted with snow plows to assist with the snow removal effort; and

• Approximately 100 additional pieces of equipment utilized by private contractors on standby beginning Monday evening, to assist with snow removal on residential streets.

Depending on the onset of the predicted four to eight inches of snow, DPW would like remind commuters the following:

• Stay at work and leave at their normal appointed hour to help prevent traffic jams and to allow snow

crews to clear major outbound thoroughfares;

• Plan alternate routes;

• Exercise caution, drive as the road conditions dictate and be on the look-out for slick spots, especially

on bridges and overpasses; and

• During snow storm conditions, snow plows are considered and should be treated as an emergency vehicle.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the city's snow web page at www.IndyGov.org/Snow. This website provides information on city road conditions; state, local and national weather; and an interactive application designed to help users decide upon their routes before traveling during snowy weather by showing which streets are priorities during any given snow fight

The Department of Public Works prepares year round to handle the onslaught of winter weather that will affect over 6,900 lane miles under its jurisdiction.

Reporter's Note: DPW is only responsible for snow removal on city streets. For snow removal information on the interstates and state routes in Indianapolis/Marion County, please contact Will Wingfield with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) at (317) 233-4676.
