Residents Look to Improve the State of Recycling at Town Hall Meetings

INDIANAPOLIS – Over the last two weeks, nearly 40 residents attended Recycle Indianapolis Town Hall meetings in Pike and Franklin townships hoping to make an impact on the city’s recycling program.

During the hour-long events, residents were able to share their thoughts on how to improve recycling participation in Marion County. Representatives from the city of Indianapolis, Indiana Recycling Coalition and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful were also on-hand to answer questions.

“Bringing people together in a forum like this is a great way to increase community involvement and ownership in the city’s recycling programs,” said DPW Director Kumar Menon. “Their feedback will also help to shape our decisions as we look to improve our programs.”

Launched in August 2006, Recycle Indianapolis was created to streamline educational and outreach efforts in order to increase awareness and participation in the city’s recycling programs like ToxDrops, eCycles, leaf collection, white goods and curbside and drop-off recycling.

The program was also recently recognized by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Keep America Beautiful for its participation in the annual Cans for Cash Challenge last year.  Over a two-week period, the city of Indianapolis collected more than 114,000 pounds of aluminum cans.

The next Recycle Indianapolis Town Hall meeting will be held on Monday, March 5 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wayne Township ESCC in Room E located at 402 North High School Road.
