City Prepared for Today's Snowfall
Snow crew already at work on city streets
INDIANAPOLIS – With snow on the horizon, the Department of Public Works has been gearing up to tackle today's expected 3 to 6 inches of snow.
Currently, DPW has 77 snow plows pre-treating city streets with an emphasis on major thoroughfares and will begin plowing streets when snow begins to accumulate. Later today, 16 trash trucks will be outfitted with snow plows to assist with the snow removal effort. Private contractors are also on stand-by. Crews are expected to remain on city streets through tomorrow's rush hour, but plans may be modified as needed.
Commuters are advised to stay at work and leave at their normal appointed hour to help prevent traffic jams and to allow snow crews to clear major outbound thoroughfares. Before leaving work, drivers should plan alternate routes. Drivers should also exercise caution and take their time when driving and be on the look-out for slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses.
In addition, drivers should be prepared for an emergency in the winter months by carrying the following items in their vehicle at all times:
• Small bag of abrasive material (i.e., salt, kitty litter) for traction;
• Flashlight and fresh batteries;
• Blankets for warmth;
• Extra clothing including mittens;
• Warning devices (i.e. flares, triangles);
• Snow shovel;
• Snow brush and ice scraper;
• Traction mats; and
• Cloth or paper towels
The Department of Public Works prepares year round to handle the onslaught of winter weather that will affect over 6,900 lane miles under its jurisdiction. More than 130 pieces of equipment can be mobilized when hazardous weather is imminent. For more information about DPW's winter weather efforts, please visit www.indygov.org/snow.
