Post Holiday Recycling Event a Success
Residents prove that recycling is an important initiative to the city
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Department of Public Works said good-bye to the holidays by holding the Post Holiday Extravaganza, a successful event that diverted several tons of waste from our landfills.
Sponsored by the city's Recycle Indianapolis program and its partners, this one-day event attracted residents who wanted to recycle Christmas trees, batteries, cardboard and unwanted electronics at various IndyParks locations.
"Collecting recycled material in this quantity just proves the importance of the impact on recycling in Indianapolis," said DPW Director Kumar Menon. "Recycling is a critical part of improving our quality of life and making Indianapolis environmentally healthy and safe."
More than 400 residents participated in the event, dropping off a total of 2.15 tons of cardboard and 41,478 pounds of used or unwanted electronics. While the cardboard will be recycled into consumer goods, many of the used electronics or its parts can be reused and are redistributed throughout our community. Electronics that cannot be reused are broken down and recycled.
In addition, IndyParks continued to collect Christmas trees at the Post Holiday Recycling Extravaganza. Since December, IndyParks has collected more than 35,000 trees, which are turned into mulch that is used to beautify the park's landscaping. The tree recycling program ends this weekend.
"Indianapolis residents responded favorably to this event and helped to keep Indianapolis beautiful in the process," Menon added.
