The City's Other Blue Crew
INDIANAPOLIS – In preparation for Sunday's AFC Championship, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) 'blue crews' were hard at work to keep our city clean and our streets safe.
Over the weekend, DPW 'blue crews' could be seen hanging AFC Championship banners, painting cross walks and removing trash. Most importantly, when snow began falling on game day at a rate of one-inch per hour, 75 snow crews had already worked overnight to salt city streets to ensure our roads were safe for drivers.
"Hosting the AFC Championship was a huge win for our city in so many ways," Mayor Bart Peterson said. "While we all celebrate Sunday's heroic comeback on the field, I want to thank the heroes that drove those snow plows, cleared our streets and kept our city clean. Their work helped ensure our fans, visitors and residents had safe, enjoyable weekend."
Snow crews were deployed Saturday night at 11:00 p.m. and worked in 12 hour shifts through Monday morning's rush hour to clear city streets and major thoroughfares for fans and residents. In addition, 12 traveling cleaning crews worked day and night to spruce up downtown, Broad Ripple, Fountain Square and Massachusetts Avenue.
"This game was the perfect opportunity for our men and women to showcase their dedication to the city of Indianapolis," said DPW Director Kumar Menon. "They stuck to the game plan to prepare the city for the big win on Sunday night."
Prior to Sunday's game, DPW crews were hard at work preparing downtown for the more than 100,000 members of the 'other' blue crew, the Colts' fans. DPW hung over 80 NFL AFC Championship banners, painted cross walks around the RCA Dome and repaired brick sidewalks within the one mile square.
