Inmates and homeless animals to benefit from charitable affair

INDIANAPOLIS - The 2nd Chance at Life Benefit for Animals will soon be held to aid two unique Indiana non-profit organizations:  Indiana Chapter of the 2nd Chance at Life Greyhound Prison Program and the Friends of Indianapolis Animal Care & Control Foundation.

  WHEN: Saturday, September 16, 2006
    1-5 p.m.

  WHERE: Broad Ripple Park
    1550 Broad Ripple Ave.

Deputy Mayor Steve Campbell will kick-off this entertaining, fun, family event that includes a concert, featuring Rebuilt & Cari Ray, vendors, a silent auction, refreshments, door prizes and canine obedience clinics. A $10 donation is suggested and a collection box will be located at the gate for any donated animal care items.

The Indiana Chapter of the 2nd Chance at Life Greyhound Prison Program is an established prison partnership program with the Indiana Department of Corrections that provides a foster care home and inmate caretakers for retired racing Greyhounds.

This unique program has been replicated in Department of Corrections facilities across the country and has been found to alleviate boredom and tension in prison and gives inmates an opportunity to learn compassion, team and vocational skills while saving the life of a retired racing Greyhound.

The Friends of Indianapolis Animal Care & Control Foundation was established to address the problem of homeless and unwanted pets in the community by supplementing the work of Indianapolis Animal Care & Control, Indiana's largest animal shelter.

Earlier in the year, the Friends Foundation was presented with a grant for their "On the Road" campaign - an innovative campaign designed to bring mobile spay/neuter services into neighborhoods.  Pet owners who live in neighborhoods with the highest volume of requests for service to Indianapolis Animal Care & Control and fall within 200% of the federal poverty income guidelines will be targeted for this campaign.
