City Announces Completion of Major Environmental Initiative

INDIANAPOLIS  - Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson will join representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Marion County Health Department, the city of Lawrence, and the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library on Wednesday to announce the completion of a major environmental initiative.

In 2004, Indianapolis received a $100,000 EPA Great Cities program grant to reduce harmful emissions from municipally-owned diesel-powered vehicles, improve overall quality of life and make central Indiana cleaner, healthier place to live, work and play.

Where:  City of Indianapolis Fleet Services garage
 1651 W. 30th Street

When:  Wednesday, July 12, 2006
 2:00 p.m.

Diesel exhaust is a mixture containing more than 450 components, including particulates and air toxics, which have been linked to several health concerns including cancer, asthma, and other respiratory illnesses. The city used the federal grant to help eliminate nearly 3,000 pounds of harmful emissions from escaping into the environment each year.
