"Connecting Educators to Engineering"
DPW celebrates National Engineers Week by kicking off new initiative
INDIANAPOLIS - To highlight National Engineers Week 2006, February 20-24, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) will kick off an initiative, "Connecting Educators to Engineering," designed to introduce young people to the possibilities engineering and technical careers have to offer.
"We recognize that it's sometimes challenging for students to grasp that engineering and technology offer exciting and rewarding career opportunities. As an agency that relies heavily on engineering practices to solve real problems in our community, it's important that we continue to maintain a sufficient supply of candidates for these positions," said DPW director Jim Garrard.
DPW- Engineering and members of the Indiana Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies have partnered to develop two-person teams that will deliver in-class activities and presentations to middle school classrooms throughout Indianapolis.
This initiative will also assist the classroom by providing field trip assistance, after school activities and/or mentoring projects.
Studies show that as early as middle school, students begin to research their personality type and determine compatible occupations.
"We hope that this initiative will ignite an interest in these exciting fields for many of these students," said Garrard.
Founded in 1951, National Engineers Week is a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education and cultural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies. This week brings initiatives that celebrate the engineering community and share its positive message around the world.
