More than 7 million cans collected during the City Recycling Challenge

INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Bart Peterson announced today that the City of Indianapolis collected 222,708 pounds of aluminum cans during the 2005 Cans for Cash: City Recycling Challenge.

"Thanks to the efforts of the entire community, we were able to more than double our 2004 total of 98,000 pounds of aluminum cans," said Mayor Peterson. "I am proud of the community’s response and look forward to building on this momentum for next year."

During the 16-day event, residents were encouraged to bring aluminum cans to several community events and drop them off at a mobile recycling container. Exactly 360 pounds of cans were collected at the mobile site; the remaining cans were collected at the city’s 29 drop-off locations and through the curbside recycling program.

Also part of the city’s outreach efforts was a pilot program for schools. At the press event, Mayor Peterson lauded the efforts of the students at Key Learning Community, who collected more than 700 cans. McFarland Middle School also actively participated in the program, collecting more than 2,000 cans. Both schools have been awarded a recycled plastic hand chair and a certificate declaring the students ‘Environmental Champions.’

Sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Novelis Corporation, the Cans for Cash: City Recycling Challenge is a national contest that rewards cities for recycling aluminum beverage cans. The Challenge will award a total of $40,000 to participating municipalities for furthering recycling efforts. The 2005 contest began on September 1 and ended on September 16. Organizers of the Challenge will announce the eight winning municipalities on Tuesday, November 15.
