Binford Boulevard rehabilitation project set to resume

Major traffic restriction to occur along corridor next week

INDIANAPOLIS –The City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works will resume construction on the Binford Boulevard rehabilitation project starting next week.

First on the list of projects to rehabilitate the corridor from 75th Street to 38th Street is reconstruction of the majority of the railroad crossing at the intersection of Fall Creek Parkway and Evanston Avenue. As a result of the railroad crossing work, Fall Creek Parkway will be reduced to one lane in each direction from March 24, 2004 through March 29, 2004. Evanston Avenue will be closed between 42nd and Fall Creek. Drivers wishing to access Evanston Avenue are advised to do so by following Keystone Avenue to 46th Street to Evanston.

Following completion of the railroad crossing, traffic restrictions similar to last year will occur and work on the remainder of the project will begin. The city will disable the lane control system along Fall Creek Parkway down to Central Avenue, providing three lanes inbound and two lanes outbound. Other work to occur this year includes:

  • Placing the final asphalt surface on Binford Boulevard north of 46th Street
  • Resurfacing Fall Creek Parkway from just south of 38th Street to 46th Street
  • Finishing drainage improvements on Fall Creek Parkway
  • Construction of concrete curb and sidewalk along southbound Fall Creek Parkway
  • Concrete patching and sidewalk rehab on the 38th Street Bridge over Fall Creek

Other major improvements in the project area include additional left turn lanes at Keystone Ave., Kessler Ave., and 75th Street, with increased left turn storage capacity at several additional locations and signal changes throughout the corridor.

Construction on the 7 million-dollar project started last year and is funded using Federal and State money provided when the State of Indiana relinquished this stretch of roadway to the city. The overall project completion date is September 2004.
