Project Open Market is a city initiative to spur investment and create economic opportunity on the Near-Eastside by removing the Market Street I-65/70 interstate ramp and building a new interchange along East Washington Street. The multimillion-dollar project, financed mostly through federal grants, will open up Market Street for new business opportunities and create a more pedestrian-friendly corridor that will better connect the Near-Eastside to downtown Indianapolis.
Background
Since the 1970s, the Market Street entrance and exit ramps to Interstates 65/70 have divided the Near-Eastside of Indianapolis from the central business district. The ramps were built to accommodate traffic entering and exiting Market Square Arena (MSA). In July 2001, the city demolished MSA, creating the opportunity for further development on the city's Near-Eastside and at the former MSA site.
Project Open Market began in spring 2008 and is scheduled for completion in fall 2009. For more information about Project Open Market's scope, financial data and construction schedule, view the project fact sheet.
