Sewer Rates

On October 3, 2005, the City-County Council approved a new three-year sewer rate schedule.

Sanitary Sewer Fees: With the new rate schedule, sanitary sewer rate increases are being phased in from 2006-2008. The average homeowner using 5,400 gallons of water per month experienced a monthly bill increase from $9.59 in 2005 to $12.38 in 2006 and $15.17 in 2007. The third increase, to approximately $17.96 per month for an average homeowner, should appear on 2008 sanitary sewer bills.

Connection Fee: A new $2,500 sewer connection fee was also established to be charged per equivalent dwelling unit (EDU). This fee requires new connections and new developments to help pay into the sewer system that has been built by others before them. Other existing fees for permit review and application processing will remain in place. Read more about the new sewer connection fee.

Benefits: Approximately $400 million over 2006-2008 for projects to reduce raw sewage overflows, bring sewer service to neighborhoods on septic systems, address sanitary sewer capacity needs, and improve treatment plants. Benefits will be seen throughout Marion County.

Stormwater Fees: In addition, the council approved a $1.00 per month increase to the $1.25 stormwater utility fee. For example, under the new rates, a single family residential bill of $1.25 per month has increased to $2.25 per month. This appears as a six-month charge on semi-annual property tax bills.

Benefits: Approximately $35 million over 2006-2008 for projects to improve drainage and reduce neighborhood flooding.
