Welcome to the Department of Public Works
Welcome to the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. This Web site offers information on the various services provided by DPW to the citizens of Indianapolis/Marion County.
 |
You rely on us every time you take out the trash, drive to work or turn on the water. DPW designs and builds city streets, bridges and sidewalks. We make sure that snow is plowed, potholes are patched and traffic lights are working. We see that your trash is collected and disposed of properly. We keep the sewers flowing and wastewater treatment plants running to keep our waterways clean. We also monitor and protect the air, water and land and enforce environmental regulations in Indianapolis/Marion County. Additionally, through our vehicle maintenance garages and field services, "We Keep Indianapolis Running." |
As Indianapolis continues to grow and prosper, our focus in DPW will be on the three E's - education, environment and economics.
| Education: DPW is committed to learning what neighborhoods want. Staff has been directed to spend more time in neighborhoods and meet with citizens to understand their issues and find ways to address them. At the same time, we want to educate the public on the variety of services, resources and programs offered by DPW. In addition, we are partnering with local schools (college, high school, middle and elementary schools) to get our younger citizens more involved. |
 |
Environment: DPW is committed to improving our quality of life by focusing our attention on the air we breathe, the waterways we use and the land on which we live.
• Air Quality: We are improving air quality by augmenting our Knozone program outreach efforts, expanding our use of E85 fuels, retrofitting vehicles with diesel oxidation catalysts as well as improving traffic planning to minimize pollution. • Water Quality: We are improving water quality by implementing the Long Term Control Plan, minimizing sewer overflows, participating in watershed groups and cleaning up the White River and Fall Creek with our partners. • Land Quality: We are improving our land quality by providing effective solid waste collection and disposal, monitoring brownfields, preventing toxic chemicals from being improperly disposed through our ToxDrop program and rendering delineation and remediation of contaminated properties. • "Going Green:" We are building a legacy of environmental coordination and collaboration, both locally and regionally, to ensure that we not only do the "right' thing, but also do the environmentally conscious "green" thing.

Economics: DPW is committed to conducting business in the most economical manner possible. This involves both internal and external economics:
• Internal: We are conducting on-going reviews of our operations and practices to minimize waste while focusing on getting the "biggest bang for our buck." • External: We are working with our business partners to bring in projects under budget by renegotiating contracts or by entering into new contracts to expand services at no additional cost while maintaining or exceeding our level of service. | |
DPW is committed to improving customer service by involving citizens in our planning and decision processes. Together, we can build a world-class city - neighborhood by neighborhood.
Sincerely,
David Sherman, Director
