INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Animal Care & Control (IACC) collected five stray llamas from the south side of the city this morning.
The pack animals, which are native to South America, are raised for their wool at farms across the state. In addition to the llamas, three goats were also collected.
"It is not uncommon for our facility to house unusual animals," said Lt. Jerry Bippus. "However, it's not often they are found running stray."
Earlier this week IACC officers collected an alligator, several birds and a pot-bellied pig. Other atypical animals that have passed through the shelter recently included a skunk, a snapping turtle and a variety of fish.
"When we do get exotics, they're usually animals we've had to confiscate due to cruelty or abandonment," added Lt. Bippus.
Every effort will be made to locate the llamas' home. If no owner comes forth, the animals will be sent to a rescue facility which can accommodate their needs.
