IACC to Host Blood Drive Benefiting Animals and Their People
INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Animal Care & Control (IACC) announced a unique blood drive event for both animals and people this Sat., Sept. 1. The event will take place at the IACC shelter, located at 2600 S. Harding St., from 1 – 4 p.m.
The Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center will be signing animals up to become blood donors while the Indiana Blood Center Bloodmobile will be available to collect human blood as well.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for animals to help other animals, and for people to help other people," said Adam Garrett, a spokesperson for IACC. "Donating blood, whether it is from a dog, a cat or a human, is a wonderful, selfless act."
All blood donors will receive care packages for their pets; including low-cost spay/neuter certificates. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their animals; for those without a pet, IACC offers hundreds of adoptable pets daily.
"Animal blood donation is a program that most people are unaware of," said Garrett. "We are excited to host an event that will have such a meaningful impact for so many families."
Adoption fees are $60 and include spay or neuter surgery, all age-appropriate vaccines, except rabies, a microchip, and a heartworm or feline leukemia test. Hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesdays the shelter is open until 7 p.m.; Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
