With Warmer Temps, More Need, IACC Supplies More Officers
INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Animal Care & Control (IACC) announced today that two additional Animal Control Officers will be patrolling the streets effective immediately, bringing the total number of officers to 23.
"Public safety is the first priority of the Animal Care & Control Department," said Earl Morgan, Director of Public Safety. "As the temperatures heat up we need a greater presence on the street."
IACC historically receives a greater number of service calls during the summer months than any other time of year. A population explosion occurs in the spring as litters are born and as more people and animals go out to enjoy the weather, the number of bites and other complaints rises.
"As the weather gets nicer we want to remind citizens that you should never approach an animal you don't know," said Morgan. "To stay safe you should never assume that an animal is friendly. If you see a stray in your neighborhood, please call the Mayor's Action Center so IACC can remove any potential threat."
IACC works year-round to combat the pet overpopulation problem in Indianapolis. The spring usually brings a barrage of litters of kittens and puppies into animal shelters around the state.
"Please be a responsible pet owner and spay and neuter your pets," said Morgan. "It is the only effective way to eliminate pet overpopulation in our city."
IACC offers a variety of services to the public, including pet adoption, microchipping and public education information.
