INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Animal Care & Control, the Humane Society of Indianapolis and representatives from participating shelters will officially kick-off "Home 4 the Holidays," a national campaign designed to promote the adoption of orphaned animals during the holiday season.
"Animal shelters and rescue groups are great places for families to find their perfect match," said Jeff Bennett, administrator for Indianapolis Animal Care & Control. "And the holiday season makes a great time to bring home a new pet."
More families add pets to their homes during the holidays than at any other time of year, yet only 17 percent of these pets are adopted from shelters. This campaign promotes the adoption of orphaned pets rather than the purchase of pets from a pet store.
The Helen Woodward Animal Center launched Home 4 the Holidays in 1999 with 14 animal shelters in San Diego, CA. More than 1,600 shelters nationwide are collaborating this year to find homes for over 300,000 orphaned dogs and cats. The following central Indiana organizations are partnering for the 6th annual holiday adoption campaign:

Throughout Home 4 the Holidays, with each pet adoption from a participating organization, you will receive: kitten, cat, puppy and dog "starter" kits containing food samples and adoption information, Sam's Club passes and giveaways from Three Dog Bakery. In addition, adopters will have the opportunity to enroll in VPI Pet Insurance, the nation's number 1 health insurance plan for pets, at a 5% discount. Adopters from Indianapolis Animal Care & Control are also eligible to receive a dog or cat toy or pet bandana.
