“Adopt an Adult” Day

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Animal Care & Control is hosting “Adopt an Adult” Day as a part of the 2003 Home 4 the Holidays national pet adoption campaign:

WHEN:   Saturday, November 22, 2003
10am-1pm

WHERE:   Indianapolis Animal Care & Control
2600 S. Harding St.

Indianapolis Animal Care & Control sees many people entering the shelter everyday looking for the perfect puppy or kitten without ever considering bringing an older animal into their lives. Some people think that older dogs that end up in a shelter are somehow genetically and behaviorally inferior when that is not the case. They may end up in a shelter because of the death of a guardian, change in work schedule, new baby, allergies, change in lifestyle, moving or any other number of issues.

Here are just a few benefits of adopting an older dog:

They’re a known commodity – You know what you’re getting in terms of size, physical appearance, health and temperament.
They’ve generally have had some training, both in obedience and housetraining.
You can teach an old dog new tricks contrary to popular belief. Older dogs have a longer attention span and often give more recognition to their trainers than puppies or young dogs.
They make great companions for older people who don’t have the stamina to keep up with a young, energetic dog.
With every adult pet adopted during “Adopt an Adult” Day, as well as throughout the Indy Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption campaign, each new owner will receive a bag of dry food, cans of moist food, a bag of treats, cat litter and a litter box. So, the next time you visit the shelter be sure to take a look at the older dogs. You may be surprised as to what, and who, you find!
