What role does your city animal shelter play in the community?

INDIANAPOLIS – Public Safety Director Robert Turner and Administrator Jim Garrard announce the partnership of Indianapolis Animal Care & Control (IACC) with The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) for the celebration of National Shelter Appreciation Week, November 2-8, 2003. HSUS first launched this commemorative week in 1996 as a way to recognize the indispensable role that the more than 6,000 animal shelters nationwide play in their communities.

"Indianapolis Animal Care & Control offers many services to promote the health, safety and welfare of the people and pets in Indianapolis," said Administrator Jim Garrard. "It's vitally important that the community understand the roles and responsibilities of the city shelter so they can take full advantage of what we have to offer, as well as realize our limitations. We are facing a pet overpopulation problem in Indianapolis. To effectively address this problem, we are going to need the understanding and support of the community."

IACC responds to over 33,000 requests for service each year, of which 80% are responded to within 24 hours. The services offered include:

  • Enforcement of Indianapolis-Marion County animal-related ordinances
Including, but not limited to dog fighting, the investigation of abandoned animals, animals not receiving proper care and treatment, sick, injured, aggressive, dangerous and/or barking animals.
  • Pet adoption
  • Animal safety, welfare and humane education
  • Acceptance of stray, abandoned and surrendered animals, which are provided food, shelter and veterinary care
  • Conducts inspections for the licensing of facilities that sell, groom and kennel animals, and
  • Assisting law enforcement agencies

IACC challenges the citizens of Indianapolis to get involved and see what a difference they can make. Here are a few ways to help:

  • Spread the word. Tell your friends about IACC's services and help promote responsible pet ownership, including spaying and neutering.
  • Lend a hand. Volunteer your time at IACC. Bathe and groom the animals, walk dogs, play with cats, help at special events, to name just a few.
  • Give a little bit. Whether it's a monetary donation or a donation of needed supplies, all donations help us achieve our vision and goals.
  • Be a hero. Report animal cruelty and neglect as well as injured or stray animals.
  • Find that special someone. Choose your next pet from IACC. The shelter is full of cats and kittens, dogs and puppies that are waiting for a new home.
