INDIANAPOLIS – This October, come “Meet Your Match” and adopt a shelter dog from Indianapolis Animal Care & Control (IACC) or the Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI). The city’s largest animal shelters are partnering with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to declare October, national Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month.
With thousands of shelter dogs adopted from IACC and HSI each year, thousands more are still awaiting their permanent homes. In 2002, they collectively received over 30,000 lost, homeless, unwanted and abandoned animals.
Diversity abounds at IACC and HSI. Dogs mature and youthful, active and laid back are just waiting to meet their match! Making a great match is as easy as one, two, three:
Hold a family meeting to discuss everybody’s canine expectations; Read up on the purebred and mix breed types that catch your interest; and Go to the shelter and “Meet Your Match!” Each shelter has staff with hands-on knowledge of the pets available for adoption to ensure that you’re finding the right dog to match your family and lifestyle needs. If you’re not able to make it to the shelter, or it’s too difficult to see all of the wonderful dogs available for adoption, visit their cyber shelters. IACC and HSI have photos and information of some of the pets available for adoption on their websites at www.indygov.org/accd and www.indyhumane.org, courtesy of Petfinder.com. During the month of October, HSI will be offering free dog park memberships to each adopter of a dog from either HSI or IACC. Annual park membership is valued at $30 so there’s no better time to “Meet Your Match” and adopt a shelter dog.
For national Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month, as well as throughout the year, all dogs available for adoption have received a health evaluation, heartworm screening, their first round of booster shots, a microchip and are spayed or neutered. Adoption fees vary by location so please call IACC at 317.327.1397 or HSI at 317.872.5650 for additional information.
