June is national “Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat” month

INDIANAPOLIS – Have you been searching for a loyal, lifelong companion? Indianapolis Animal Care & Control is encouraging those who are in search of the perfect pet to consider adopting a cat during June, national “Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat” month, sponsored by the ASPCA. Stephen J. Musso, Acting President of the ASPCA notes that, “Spring is the time of year when animal shelters are filled with cats of all ages, sizes, and colors.”

Indianapolis Animal Care & Control considers pet ownership a lifetime commitment- a lifetime of food, water, companionship and love. While recognizing this commitment, shelter administrator Jim Garrard reminds that “Just as pet owners contribute greatly to the lives of the pets they rescue, they also reap immeasurable benefits from the animals they adopt.”

Recent human-animal bond literature is quick to point out that in addition to the long recognized benefits of companionship, caring, sharing, and security aspects, pet ownership can also have very positive health benefits.

Indianapolis Animal Care & Control will help to get you set up with a new feline friend. Use the following checklist to make sure you are prepared from day one:

  • Cat litter, litter box, and scoop
  • High-quality cat food
  • Scratching post (at least 3’ tall and sturdy) or scratching pad
  • Food Dish
  • Water Dish
  • Interactive toys
  • Brush, comb, and nail clippers
  • Cat bed or a box with a warm, clean towel or blanket
  • Cat carrier
  • Collar with ID tag
