Behavior problems should not be cause for pet relinquishment

INDIANAPOLIS – To stem the tide of pets entering the shelter, Indianapolis Animal Care & Control is offering Behavior Modification training for dogs and their owners. Most behavior issues arise from anxiety and fear. Behavior Modification techniques will help dogs to relax, teach them social skills and structure, and will give them a new default behavior that is incompatible with the undesirable behavior they were previously performing. Behavior Modification strengthens the bond between the owner and the dog through understanding.

The first Behavior Modification series for puppies (10-18 weeks) will be held:

WHEN:    March 6-27, 2003

WHERE:   Indianapolis Animal Care & Control
2600 S. Harding St.

TIME:   7:45-8:45pm

COST:   $30 for the entire series. (This promotional pricing is good for this series only. Additional series will be held for $60 and adopters from Animal Care & Control receive a 10% discount.)

Another 6-week series for adolescents and older dogs (6 months and up) will begin April 3rd at the cost of $90.

The goal of this training is to keep people and their pets together and to help owners fix common, resolvable problems that are threatening the relationship with their pet. Relinquishment of a pet is a drastic step that many people take in dealing with behavior problems.

The Behavior Modification instructor is Warren G. Patitz. Warren brings over 20 years of dog instruction experience to Indianapolis Animal Care & Control and is also the author of “Recreational Agility.”

A class description, calendar of classes and information on dealing with behavior problems can be found on our website at www.indygov.org/accd.
