FAQ's

How old do you have to be to Race?
Kids as young as five race, and so do moms and dads. All ages enjoy BMX racing.

My son is 11 and my daughter is 5. Will they race each other? And who will my husband race?
In BMX racing, riders are divided into "motos" based on age and ability. Every attempt is made to "level the playing field" so everyone has a chance to win.

What is the NBL?
The NBL (National Bicycle League) is the not-for-profit sanctioning body for the sport of Bicycle Moto Cross racing in the United States. The NBL is recognized by the United States Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee. BMX will made its first Olympic appearance in 2008.

Why join the NBL?
Members have more opportunities to race against different levels of competitors and  become part of the State and National race series.

Do I have to be a member of the NBL to practice and race at Lake Sullivan?
No, you do not have to be a member of the NBL to practice. You will need to be a member of the NBL for some races, but not all of them.

How do I join the NBL?
Pay the annual fee and complete the license form that we have available here, and you are on your way to a lot of fun!

What kind of bicycle?
Bicycles must be BMX style with at least one working brake and no kickstand, reflectors, pegs or protruding objects. Bicycle must be in good working order.

What safety equipment must I wear?
A full face helmet or helmet with mouth protection; (if you do not have the proper helmet we will rent you one for $1). You should wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. For practice sessions we will allow short pants with shin guards and a short -sleeved shirt with elbow pads. Closed shoes are a must and gloves are recommended. We also recommend handlebar, frame and stem pads on your bicycle.

Will you be offering any clinics?
Clinics will be offered on select Saturdays from 10 am to noon. The cost ($6.00) also allows participants an additional two hours of "open ride" time, from noon to 2:00 pm.  Bikes are available to rent ($4) for those who participate in a clinic or have completed a clinic this year.
