CULTURAL LEGACY Indy Parks and Recreation's Planning staff is working to identify and preserve Indianapolis' rich historical and cultural assets, including landscapes, archeological sites, monuments and historic park properties.  Indianapolis is fortunate to have an historic park and boulevard blueprint as the foundation for its modern parks system.

The Kessler Boulevard System
This 3,400-acre interconnected system, created by renowned German Landscape Architect George Kessler, encompasses 12 parks, six parkways, and two boulevards, which encompass numerous historic features such as parkway alignments, landscape composition, walks, bridges, buildings, statuary, and fountains. 

Did you Know?  The Kessler system is one of the country's largest Park and Boulevard listings on the National Register of Historic Places!
