Thatcher Park Family Center is closed to the public during the month of November while the Department of Parks and Recreation makes repairs, renovations and improvements to the facility. This temporary closure addresses the issue of public safety while crews operate heavy construction equipment and bring in a large amount of supplies to complete a number of projects.
The investment of the projects totals more than $600,000. Construction crews will install a new HVAC unit on the indoor pool deck, remove two air handlers, remove and replace the duct, paint the pool and restroom areas, install new rear and overhead doors and a climbing wall in the pool, build an office on the pool deck, and rework toilet partitions, showers, pool deck paint and lights in the pool and restroom areas.
"This temporary closure will allow us to efficiently complete a series of improvements to create a sustainable system that also provides an elevated level of service to our patrons," said Indy Parks & Recreation Director Stuart Lowry. "We appreciate the patience and accommodation of our customers and user groups while we work to renovate this valuable community asset and look forward to seeing everyone back at Thatcher Park Family Center soon."
A tentative reopening of the center is set for Dec. 5. During this time, all Thatcher Park Family Center programming and employees will be relocated to other Indy Parks facilities. Renovations on the Thatcher Park indoor pool will continue after Dec. 5. A grand reopening of the pool facility will be announced at a later date. Earlier this year the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works invested approximately $150,000 in creating a drainage system for Thatcher Park and the surrounding neighborhood. The upcoming improvements also follow the 2008 installment of a new $150,000 roof with a 30-year lifespan at Thatcher Park’s family center and the 2006 installment of a new $35,000 liner in the park’s pool.
