Tree Ordinance

Before you go out on a 'limb...'
Tree ordinance?  Permits for pruning trees and shrubs?

Many people are unaware there is an ordinance that governs trees and plants on City/County property. This ordinance applies to the installation of plant materials, and the maintenance and care of our City's trees.

Right-of-Ways
Let Indy Parks' Forestry Section help you determine if the tree you are planting or pruning is in the right-of-way [see right].  The City's foresters will help you obtain the required permit you need before any planting, pruning, fertilizing or removing can be performed on or near a City-owned tree. Foresters are also trained in proper pruning techniques that will ensure the health of the tree after pruning is complete.

Chapter 701 of the Revised Code of the City of Indianapolis
This document discusses the responsibilities and the processes the City must adhere to when pruning, planting, or otherwise manipulating any plant material in the City/County right of way.

Did you know, all private property owners are liable and responsible for maintenance of plants around public property?
In addition, it indicates the responsibilities of private property owners. This important document helps to prevents trees from being damaged, or injured in a manner that compromises the safety and health of Indianapolis' urban canopy.

Indy Parks Forestry staff and crews are responsible for the enforcement of Chapter 701. The forestry staff is here to help you understand the permitting process, and is charged with investigating and pursuing any ordinance violations.
