IMPORTANT NEWS

GERMAN CHURCH AND 30TH PARK CLOSED

OCT. 22, 2008

The Department of Public Works project to replace the parking lots and entrance drive at German Church and 30th Park will require the park be closed during construction.

The site, 10510 E. 30th St., served as a storm debris staging location earlier this year, and truck traffic destroyed the asphalt. The DPW contractor, Calumet Civil Contractors Inc., will erect a sign stating the park will be closed for construction.

The parking lot and park are expected to be open for use after substantial completion is achieved. The substantial completion date for this project is Nov. 25, 2008, with a final completion date on or before May 1, 2009. The contractor will return in the spring to place the surface coat of asphalt, paint parking spaces and install parking bumpers.

REPAIRS TO CENTRAL CANAL CLOSE TOWPATH BETWEEN MICHIGAN ROAD & HOLCOMB GARDENS

Oct. 14, 2008

Veolia Water Indianapolis, LLC (VWI), the day-to-day manager and operator of Indianapolis Water, closed the Central Canal Towpath between Michigan Road and Holcomb Gardens near the Butler University Campus. This closure is expected to last approximately two months.

Uprooted and damaged trees between the Central Canal and the White River near 44th Street have impacted the north side of the canal bank. The Central Canal provides a critical supply of water to nearly 60% of Indianapolis Water customers. Immediate repairs to this portion of the canal are necessary to ensure the safety and adequacy of the Indianapolis drinking water supply and prevent a possible breach of the canal wall. Construction crews will install sheet piling along 250 feet of the outer wall of the canal to restore stability and prevent further damage.

Construction gates will be set up along the Towpath at Michigan Road and at Holcomb Gardens to prevent unauthorized access to the construction site. Directional sings will be placed to help trail users navigate around the closure. Project updates will be available on both the Indianapolis Water and Indianapolis Greenways Web sites.
