Mayor Greg Ballard proclaims March as Toastmasters Month!
Acknowledging that the ability to speak in a clear and effective manner is a powerful and important skill that can help overcome barriers to effective performance in virtually every endeavor and line of work, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard proclaimed that 'March is Toastmasters Month' in Indianapolis.
Mrs. Winnie Ballard presented the proclamation, on behalf of the Mayor, on Friday, March 14th in Room 118 of the City-County Building at a special Toastmasters meeting. Refreshments were enjoyed by all.
In the proclamation, Mayor Ballard encourages all citizens of Indianapolis, and particularly employees of the City-County government, to recognize the many accomplishments and opportunities in public speaking and leadership enhancement that Toastmasters makes possible for people everywhere. He further suggests visiting a Toastmasters gathering to personally experience growth in public speaking and leadership.

About City-county Communicators...
The City-County Communicators, the chartered Toastmasters© club serves local government employees in Indianapolis-Marion County! Meetings are every Friday at 12 noon in Room 2001 of the City-County Building. Visitors are always welcome! No appointment necessary!
Our club is relatively new, having chartered in March of 2002. We have several Advanced Toastmasters, but most of our members are working on their Competent Toastmaster certificates.
How Toastmasters works. At Toastmasters, we learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. Our club is made up of 15 to 30 people who meet once a week for about an hour. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice:
- Conducting meetings. Meetings usually begin with a short business session which helps us learn basic meeting procedures.
- Giving impromptu speeches. We present one-to two-minute impromptu speeches on assigned topics.
- Presenting prepared speeches. One or more persons present speeches based on projects from the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership Program manuals. Projects cover such topics as speech organization, voice, language, gestures, and persuasion.
- Offering constructive evaluation. Every prepared speaker is assigned an evaluator who points out speech strengths and offers suggestions for improvement.

Members also have access to other books as well as audio and video cassettes on speaking and leading. We also receive the award-winning The Toastmaster, a monthly magazine that offers the latest insights on speaking and leadership techniques.
Toastmasters and Leadership. Leadership cannot be learned in a day. It takes practice. In Toastmasters, we build leadership skills by organizing and conducting meetings and motivating others to help them. Club leadership roles and a leadership development program also offer opportunities to learn and practice. Just as we Toastmasters learn to speak simply by speaking, we learn leadership by leading.
About Toastmasters International. Toastmasters International is a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership. The first Toastmasters club was established on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California, by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, who conceived and developed the idea of helping others to speak more effectively. More clubs were formed, and Toastmasters International was incorporated under California law on December 19, 1932.
