About the Census

The U.S. Census is important for many reasons, but it's main purpose is for congressional redistricting.  To learn more about the U.S. Census and view apportionment information, visit the U.S. Census Bureau web site.

The census is a population count of the United States which provides socio-economic details for specific geographic areas.  This decennial enumeration occurs once every ten years at the begining of a new decade, i.e. 1980, 1990, 2000.

Census data are then aggregated to produce summaries for blocks, block groups (groups of individual blocks), and census tracts (groups of block groups).  Each census tract will have one or more block groups and each block group will be comprised of one or more blocks.
