Community meeting to give Eastsiders chance to shape ongoing plans for Irvington Historic District
Indianapolis – Eastside residents, community leaders and business owners will have an opportunity to weigh-in on a series of recommendations and topics related to the ongoing planning process for the Irvington Historic District. A public workshop is scheduled for this weekend where historic planners will gather community input on topics ranging from land-use recommendations to architectural and design guidelines.
When: Saturday, Aug. 27 , 9 – 11 a.m.
Where: Irvington United Methodist Church (Fellowship Hall) 30 N. Audubon Rd.
Working with the Eastside community, the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission (IHPC) staff developed an interim historic plan for Irvington, a primarily residential area rich with history and unique architecture located in Warren Township (just East of Downtown).
The interim historic plan was adopted by the IHPC in December 2004 and allows the commission to protect primary and accessory structures from demolition, review plans for new construction of primary buildings, and oversee rezoning and variance petitions. The final plan, which will provide more comprehensive protection, is expected to be complete by Summer 2006.
Planners expect the new historic district to be a boost to Eastside neighborhoods and businesses.
"Historic designation invokes a sense of community pride that leads to stable, safer, thriving urban neighborhoods," said Preservation Planner Emily Mack.
Studies have shown that property values tend to rise in communities protected by historic designation.
Upon completion, Irvington will become Indianapolis' largest historic district.
