City seeks public input on brownfields redevelopment
Indianapolis – The City of Indianapolis will host a public forum focused on increasing community involvement in the city's efforts to clean up and redevelop abandoned, contaminated properties, known as "brownfields."
When: Thurs., April 14, 6 p.m.
Where: Haughville Library Branch conference room, 2121 W. Michigan
The city's brownfields coordinator, Chris Harrell, will be joined at the forum by representatives from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and the Indiana Development Finance Authority. Discussion will focus on increasing community partnerships to tackle issues related to cleaning up and redeveloping contaminated sites, and residents will have the opportunity to raise questions and concerns about brownfields.
Brownfields are a blight in neighborhoods across the country and can pose an environmental and human health risk. They also can lead to increased criminal activity in surrounding neighborhoods.
Since Mayor Bart Peterson took office, the city has invested well over a million dollars in brownfields redevelopment. Three years ago, Peterson launched the Brownfields Grant and Loan Program in partnership with LISC, marking the first time the city earmarked funding specifically for brownfields redevelopment. These grants have supported several successful brownfields redevelopment efforts in local neighborhoods.
Brownfields redevelopment was a major plank in both of the Mayor's "Peterson Plans."
