Countdown to Connect: 10 days

A periodic release providing facts about homelessness and highlighting how residents and businesses can help by getting involved in Indy Homeless Connect

FACT:
Homeless children, who make-up about 30 percent of our homeless population, are much more likely to suffer from mental and physical health problems.

Medical care and mental health counseling will be offered at Indy Homeless Connect
Indy Homeless Connect, the all-day event on Dec. 13 dedicated to outreach and care for the homeless, will feature medical treatment and mental health counseling as part of the core services available to homeless individuals and families.

Several doctors and medical personnel from Genneserat Free Clinics, the Homeless Initiative Program, and the Marion County Health Department will be onsite at the Convention Center to offer their services free of charge to the homeless.  Health screenings, as well as acute medical care will be provided.

Counselors from Midtown Mental Health will be on hand for any homeless clients seeking mental health services.

To look out for the long-term needs of the homeless clients, follow-up appointments will be available to continue any necessary medical care or treatment.

All those attending Indy Homeless Connect will have access to a wide variety of other services and essential items free of charge including food, vision care, winter clothing and housing assistance.  Non-essential, add-on services, like free phone calls, books, haircuts, youth activities and others, will also be available.

The goals of Indy Homeless Connect are to connect the homeless to key services, increase awareness of the local homelessness issue, and engage the community at-large in a fight to end and prevent homelessness.

How to help
There are a number of areas where volunteer support is needed, and event organizers are still seeking donations of packaged foods, winter wear and other items for the Dec. 13 event.

Visit www.indyhomelessconnect.com to learn about volunteer opportunities and how to get involved in Indy Homeless Connect. You may also call 630-0853 ext. 209 for more information.
