City seeks public input on brownfields redevelopment
Indianapolis – The City of Indianapolis will host its second public forum focused on increasing community involvement in the city’s efforts to clean up and redevelop abandoned, contaminated, or underutilized properties known as "brownfields."
When: Wed., November 30th 6 p.m. – 7: 30 p.m.
Where: East 38th St. Library Branch 5420 E. 38th Street
The city’s Brownfields Redevelopment Coordinator, Chris Harrell, will be joined at the forum by representatives from the Indiana Brownfields Program. Discussion will focus on increasing community partnerships to tackle issues related to cleaning up and redeveloping contaminated sites. Residents will also have the opportunity to raise questions and concerns about brownfields, as well as review and comment on plans related to the 2006 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant application.
Brownfields are a blight in neighborhoods across the country and can pose an environmental and human health risk. They also can lead to increased criminal activity in surrounding neighborhoods.
Since Mayor Bart Peterson took office, the city has invested well over a million dollars in brownfields redevelopment. Three years ago, Peterson launched the Neighborhood Brownfields Grant Program in partnership with Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), marking the first time the city earmarked funding specifically for brownfields redevelopment. These grants have supported several successful brownfields redevelopment efforts in local neighborhoods.
Brownfields redevelopment was a major plank in both of the Mayor’s "Peterson Plans."
