Deputy Mayor, community to celebrate another milestone in Meadows revitalization
Indianapolis – Deputy Mayor Jane Henegar will join leaders of the United North East Community Development Corporation to celebrate the grand opening of Walnut Ridge, a new 78-unit housing development offering affordable rent to low-income seniors. The development's completion marks another important milestone in the ongoing revitalization of a Northeast side community known as the Meadows.
When: Tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 28, 10 a.m.
Where: Walnut Ridge Apts., 3447 N. Emerson
A series of targeted redevelopment initiatives has spurred new growth and investment in the Meadows, breathing new life into an area that has faced its share of challenges over the last several years.
This Spring, Mayor Bart Peterson joined U.S. Senator Evan Bayh and Congresswoman Julia Carson to celebrate the demolition of the former Parkwood apartments, a blighted, crime-ridden rental complex located on the 3500 block of East 38th Street. The razing of Parkwood kicked-off an extensive multi-million dollar housing redevelopment that will take the place of the former neighborhood eyesore, creating hundreds of quality, affordable housing opportunities. The new housing community, Villages of Mill Crossing, welcomed its first new residents this Summer.
Just West of the Parkwood redevelopment, a large, vacant retail building in the heart of the Meadows was rehabilitated and transformed into The Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School, a public charter school expanding academic opportunities for young people on the Northeast side and across the city.
The latest redevelopment effort, Walnut Ridge, will serve low-income seniors age 55 and older. Seniors sometimes face challenges from living on a fixed income and affording a safe, decent place to live. All of the Walnut Ridge units will be priced below market rate, with some apartments specifically reserved for very low-income seniors who are in housing crisis and on the brink of possibly becoming homeless. Residents will also have access to a variety of onsite services and programs.
