Mayor to join city code inspectors on Southside sign sweep

Indianapolis – Mayor Bart Peterson will join city code inspectors on a targeted sign sweep in Franklin Township to remove illegal signs from public streets and intersections.

When: Tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 13, 8:30 a.m.

Where: The gas station at 5935 E. Thompson Rd. (corner of Arlington and Thompson)

Inspectors from the city’s Department of Metropolitan Development regularly perform "sign sweeps" throughout Indianapolis. A sweep involves utilizing additional code inspectors to increase enforcement in a targeted area.

The Mayor and code inspectors will be removing signs placed on utility poles and other locations near city streets and roadways. Aside from traffic and street signs, city code prohibits any signage being placed in the public right of way.

Illegal signs that clutter streets and intersections are an eyesore in neighborhoods and can obstruct sight lines, creating a public safety hazard.
