Structural Permits

Structural permits are the way the city of Indianapolis and the Division of Compliance regulate construction, as well as record information on structural work within the City for various statistical reasons, such as the Census. This is designed to ensure that all construction in the city is safe, and it is the safety of the occupants of buildings that is the primary reason for having construction codes. The State of Indiana adopts several codes, among them the International Residential Code and the International Building Code. In addition, there are federal, state and local laws that govern construction, such as those covering historic preservation, well-field protection areas, and flood plain development.

There are several different types of permits, based on the type of construction. If Improvement Location Permits (ILPs) regulate where a structure can be built and what it can be used for, then Structural permits regulate how it can be safely built.
