Sec. 621-118. Parking of certain trucks and commercial vehicles restricted.

  1. Overnight parking. It shall be unlawful for the owner, operator or driver of commercial vehicle or truck if such vehicle has more than two (2) axles, or for the person in charge thereof, to park such vehicle or to permit it to be parked or to stand upon any street or alley in the city between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 6:00 a.m. for a period of time longer than one (1) hour.
  2. Residence districts. It shall be unlawful for the owner, operator or driver of any truck with more than two (2) axles (including the truck-tractor of a semi tractor-trailer), or for the person in charge thereof, to park such vehicle on or to permit it to be parked or to stand upon any street or alley in a residential district for a period of time longer than one (1) hour, except household or other moving or delivery trucks while actually loading or unloading property for adjacent residences or service trucks of persons while engaged in service calls at adjacent residences.
Sec.730-505. Civil zoning violations.

(a) It shall be unlawful for any person who is the owner or contract vendee of, or who has a possessory interest in, real property located in Marion County to cause, suffer or allow any of the following civil zoning violations to occur on such property:

  1. The parking or storage in any zoning district, the provisions of which do not specifically permit such a use, of any motor vehicle used or designed (a) for use in pulling, towing, hauling, transporting, or (b) as a temporary or permanent base, platform or support for equipment, machinery, materials or other goods. This provision shall include but not be limited to school buses, buses used for public transportation, stake body trucks, dump trucks, trucks or tractors having dual rear wheels or more than two (2) axles, semi-trailer tractors, semi-trailers and trailers having dual rear wheels or more than one (1) axle or having an overall length of more than twelve (12) feet.

In Indianapolis/Marion County, the only locations that commercial vehicle parking is allowed, are locations that are specifically zoned as such (i.e. C7 High Intensity Commercial District).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I park my semi-truck in my driveway?
A: No. Semi-Trucks are not permitted to be parked in residential areas.

Q: What about tow trucks, are they considered commercial vehicles?
A: Yes. The primary use of a tow truck is pulling or towing vehicles, and is commercial in nature.

Q: Since I can't park on my driveway, can I just park in the street out front of my house?
A: No. The street is still considered a residential district, and your truck could be ticketed and/or towed.

Q: There is a large grocery store across the street from my house, can I park there overnight with the owner's permission?
A: No. Unless a commercial location is specifically zoned for commercial vehicle parking and/or storage, it is not permitted, and your vehicle could be towed.
